Project Overview

PME was contracted to supply a specialized lifting beam (spreader beam) with a guaranteed 400-ton load capacity for an ArcelorMittal steel plant in Europe.

Execution Process

  1. Documentation & Standards: Strict adherence to the customer's manufacturing documentation and technical guidelines, particularly regarding material specifications and welding requirements.
  2. Project Roadmap: We established a precise schedule covering everything from technological preparation and material sourcing to stress relief, NDT, and shipping readiness.
  3. Inspection and Test Plan (ITP): For such high-stakes projects, we developed a custom ITP including strict acceptance criteria for every stage.
  4. Just-in-Time Sourcing: Material procurement focused on quality and the shortest possible lead times for specialized steel cuts.
  5. Operational Efficiency: Production was planned to minimize downtime and avoid unnecessary handling of oversized components.
  6. WPQR Certification: We successfully obtained Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR) for joining heterogeneous materials within an extremely tight timeframe.
  7. Welding Intensity: r7 welders worked across morning, afternoon, and night shifts, consuming over 1,000 kg of filler material via the MAG method. The final defect rate was an impressive 0.8%.
  8. Stress Relief: Since high-strength materials prevented traditional heat treatment in a furnace (due to potential strength loss), we utilized vibratory stress relief.
  9. Comprehensive NDT: Our ISO 9712 certified specialists performed full Non-Destructive Testing, verifying both surface integrity and internal homogeneity.
  10. Load Testing in the Netherlands: The beam passed a 600-ton static and functional load test with flying colors. A 100% magnetic particle inspection (MT) post-test confirmed the unit was completely free of cracks or defects.
  11. Surface Protection: The device was finished with a specialized coating system in a high-visibility fluorescent shade.

Summary

Despite a seemingly impossible deadline, meticulous planning and active project management allowed us to deliver the beam on time for functional testing.
