NDT and emergency repair of cracks in cement grinder

Progress of the intervention — Emergency
In August 2024, a customer from Cemex contacted us, with an emergency situation. During the regular operation of their cement mill, cracks appeared on the welded shell stiffeners. If the defects were not quickly remedied, the entire mill would threaten to crash, resulting in considerable financial losses.
Diagnosis and preparation of repair
Upon arrival at the scene, tests were first carried out -- visual, capillary and ultrasound diagnostics -- to determine the extent of the damage. The analysis showed that the cracks are not just superficial, but extend deep into the load-bearing structure. This meant that the repair could not only be carried out cosmetically, but required a special welding procedure, the assembly of a team and a repair schedule.
Crack repair + testing
Our team performed the repair using a specialized procedure using the most modern welding materials. This welding material was able to eliminate even the age of the original shell material. Once the repairs were completed, the inspection phase was followed by the defectoscopy phase, which gave us proof that the repair was done correctly.
Result and benefit for the client
After handing over the repaired equipment, its safe operation was restored. To prevent future problems, unexpected downtime and costs beyond routine maintenance, we recommended to the customer a regular inspection by our specialists. Systematic monitoring, equipment for non-destructive testing and early detection of potential defects can ensure the long-term reliability of the “overkill” equipment and minimize the risks of unplanned outages. Regular inspection by PME expert team is a common standard for all our partners.
